Feeling jitters about Twitter
Monday, April 20, 2009
I know, I know. Everybody is doing it and it's verra, verra cool. But there's still this part of me that clings to my cassette tapes and turntable whenever something new steps into my path.
Oh, but give me a product for free, a coupon or a contest entry -- and I'm all over it like glitter on Edward. Le sigh.
My main fear is Twitter addiction, but there's something else that kind of makes me get all nervy: putting my thoughts down in 140 characters or less.
I mean, I find it hard enough trying to sit down and write a novel instead of a 30-second radio spot, so how is Twitter going to help me?
Well, I'd spend less time getting my thoughts out to the universe, I guess. Hmm, that might have something to do with the overall appeal. And the fact that there are some pretty nifty Twitterers (is that the term?) to follow. Like the exercise guru who puts out different exercises that you can do anywhere, anytime.
Plus, there are some Twittering contests out there...
But first, I might want to catch up on all the other stuff piling up around me... including the WIP. ;)
You know I have to ask: Twitter -- friend or foe?

Both.
It's like a huge chat room filled with interesting people talking about mundane day-to-day life problems (that make your problems tiny), others that have interesting links or comments. It's also addictive and will give you one more reason to procrastinate. But hey, that'll give you another "Excuse of the Week" post, won't it?
I do like Twitter.
I've made a lot of good comments, and basically since I'm being confined to my home town like the ladies of the TON were of yore it's my only connection to other writers.
And they're keeping me from the ham too, so I don't go spoiling it. LOL!! ;)
Come Twitter. Come. come. Come. ;)
Yes, I do realize I am pimping Twitter like the guy who used to try to sell Ernie letters on Sesame Street.
I cannot leave it on/open when I'm working. I'm trying to be disciplined and just look one or twice a day, but it's hard.
I've been a member for quite a while... But only actively for about the last 3 weeks. Seems like participation by writers has recently EXPLODED. And I swear it seems like some people are on it constantly by the number of their updates. Don't know how they get work done.
It is fun, though...
I think you'd totally get Twitter addicted. I don't do it, but I'm facebook addicted (which is similar in the status update part), and I'm unhappy about it. And I don't want to be addicted, but I am!! It's terrible. Don't do it, you'll compromise your blog, you'll be divided. Even if you say you'll get your thoughts out in less characters, I so think you'll be less focused.
Those are my two bits. Now, go cheer for the Canucks.

Oh Leah, the LAST thing I need is another excuse! LOL
Amy, you totally pimp anything and everything -- but that's what makes you so... unique!
Maureen, I don't know if i can take on any more fun at the moment. ;)
Oh Judi, you know me all too well. Now was it you who broke the police officer's leg when the Canucks won? LOL
Twitter is a procrastinator's best friend (or worst enemy?)
I, too, have had to show some discipline and turn it off for most of the day. It's too easy to dash to the computer everytime it tweets.
And the blog definitely suffers.
